Symptoms: When entering fdisk through DOS, "error reading fixed disk" appears.

Description: Error reading fixed disk occurs when the boot sector of a hard disk cannot read the partition information correctly. After entering fdisk and enabling large disk support, fdisk will automatically quit and cause this error to appear.

Tested Solutions:

WARNING: The solution to this problem WILL cause data loss.

A useful tool to solve this problem is something called "clean.exe." which can be located here. This removes all known traces of partitioning and returns it as if the drive were new. Another solution is to perform a low level format using a utility provided by the manufacturer of your hard disk. These can be located in the downloads section.

Once a clean or low level format has been completed, the drive needs to be repartitioned through the use of fdisk in dos (explained here), then the "format c:" command (explained here).
