Symptoms: There are many symptoms that can occur due to a display not working correctly. These can include, but are not limited to:
Description: All these errors can occur due to an incompatibility with the graphics card currently installed. The graphics card is a board that plugs into the motherboard of your computer. This will generally be the highest card you can see when your tower is standing vertically (the one nearest the power supply). Tested Solutions:
1: Incompatible graphics card Possible symptoms for this solution may include:
To check if your graphics card is compatible, you must first determine what plug your card uses. The main types are AGP or PCI. An AGP connection has multiple "speeds". These are referred to on the card specifications as "AGP Xx" (The X is replaced by either 2, 4, or 8). You must find out this number before you continue. (This is usually located on the box the card came in, or alternatively you can look on the manufacturers website) NOTE: If your card is PCI, then the following section does not apply. Read part 2. To compare your card speed to what your motherboard can support, you have to look for a similar thing on the motherboard itself, on the box, in the documentation, or on the manufacturers website. It should be self explanatory on how to check compatibility from here, for example: If you have an AGP 4x card on a board that will support AGP 8x only, the card will not run properly, if at all. 2: Incompatible resolution Possible symptoms for this solution may include:
This problem may arise if your screen does not support the resolution your computer has selected. If it is possible to navigate the screen, then you must change your resolution to a lower size. If this does not solve the problem, your solution may be in part 1 or 3. If you cannot navigate your way through the screen and have access to a larger monitor, attempt to connect it to the computer and change the resolution then. 3: Damaged or broken monitor NOTE: We do not suggest that you go and buy a new monitor. It is often possible to get your monitor repaired for a much lower price. Possible symptoms for this solution may include:
It may be that your monitor is damaged. It is most likely that some adjustments have been knocked out of place during transportation of the monitor, though it can happen with age (CRT monitors have a life of up to and beyond 10 years, though their quality will degrade over time). It is possible to get the monitor looked at and possibly repaired by a professional for a low cost, though the monitor may need to be replaced depending on your situation. |
